Chennai: Somdev Devvarman would be India's best bet while Yuki Bhambri is expected to carry his good form into the new season which is full of new challenges for the Indian players as ATP Aircel Chennai Open begins, here tomorrow.

India have three players in the singles main draw, which has world number eight and 2011 champion Stanislas Wawrinka as the top seed apart from 2008 champion and Russian second seed Mikhail Youzhny.

Wawrinka is coming into the season-opener on the back of his best career season and the Swiss will be the player to watch.

His stunning show in late 2013 season, when he stretched world number one Novak Djokovic in the US Open semifinals and also presented a stiff challenge to other top players, makes him a favourite in this tournament.

Wawrinka is two wins away from 300 in his career (298-198). Three other Swiss players have reached the 300-wins plateau in their career, Roger Federer (923), Marc Rosset (433) and Jakob Hlasek (432).

From Indian point of view, the local fans would hope that Somdev, who reached the final in 2009, does well. He had a terrific 2013 season and in his quest to break into top-50, he would eye a strong start to the season.

The job is not easy but he got a good draw as he will have a qualfier as his opening rival. The slow courts are of Somdev's liking as he likes to play from the baseline.

Stanislas Wawrinka eyes Chennai glory

Stanislas Wawrinka

Chennai: Andre Agassi needs to be held responsible, rather credited, for the pioneering effort. Running up the hills in his home town Nevada, the American tennis star set the trend of pre-season training during what supposed to be an ‘off-season’ in the packed tennis calendar.

The four Australian Open crowns — season’s first grand slam — were fruits of his labour and Agassi’s success inspired other professionals to give up their Christmas parties for strengthening camps.

Swiss star Stanislas Wawrinka was on the road till mid November playing the year-end ATP World Tour Finals and hardly enjoyed the break as he had been putting his body through punishing regime in Europe before he packed his bag again the day after Christmas for the new season.

The Swiss world no. 8 is not complaining though as he knows the Tour has become so competitive that only the fittest survive.

As the 19th edition of the Chennai Open that begins here on Monday ushers in a new season, Wawrinka would be hoping to translate that hard work into success stories and live up to the expectations he left behind last year.

In 2013, a dream year that saw Wawrinka emerge out of the shadows of his illustrious countryman Roger Federer, he showed the tennis world that he has it in him to end the Big Four’s — Rafael Nadal, Federer, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray — slam domination.

He knocked out defending champion Murray in the US Open and came close to beating Djokovic in his maiden grand slam semi-final appearance.

Wawrinka, who won the title here in 2011 as a wild card entrant, is the top seed. The 18-year tournament history suggests the 250-point event has been a curse for top seeds.

The no.1 seeds were eliminated either in the first or the second rounds on five occasions, while the no. 2s suffered early exits seven times.

Boris Becker, Rafael Nadal, Richard Krajicek, Magnus Norman, Nikolay Davydenko and Marin Cilic are part of the ignominious list of those who packed their bags early.

Hyderabad: A man from Chennai was arrested from the Mallepally area here on Thursday on charges of abducting a minor girl from Old City and taking her to Kerala after making false promises of training her in singing.

Accused Mohammed Mustafa, rented a house in Asif Nagar and allegedly kidnapped a 15-year-old girl staying in his neighbourhood on December 11, took her to Alappuzha and kept her in his friend's house, Deputy Commissioner of Police (West Zone) V Satyanarayana told reporters here.

Mustafa allegedly prepared a fake 'voter ID card' for the victim with a fake name and showed her to a few people, the senior police officer said, adding the accused wanted the victim to change her name.

Allegedly, he planned to traffick the minor girl to Dubai, the DCP said. Following a complaint, the Humayun Nagar police registered a case under Section 366 (kidnapping) and Section 345 (wrongful confinement)of the Indian Penal Code against Mustafa, rescued the girl from his friend's house at Alappuzha and arrested Mustafa on Thursday.

Besides this case, Mustafa allegedly collected huge amounts from several people telling that his consignment was held up in the airport for customs clearance, the police said.
